Can't Have Anything Nice

Posted 08-14-2016 at 12:31 AM by aliasfinn

I learned that years ago and still follow that way of thinking. When I was a kid I went on a rare bike-hike, didn't ride a bike too often because I hated bringing my possessions with me. I went with this kid and his brother downtown just to have a place to go. They each had new ten-speeds that they got for Christmas and I had my beat up old spyder bike that had a loose handlebar and a problem with the chain coming off on occasions. I had trouble keeping up with them, especially going up hills. We stopped at a medical building to get sodas because there was a machine in the lobby. The soda machine was only about 30 feet from the front door and we were only in there about 5 minutes. When we came out, both ten-speeds were gone but my bike was still there. My friends were really upset, one was near tears. He asked his brother, " why didn't they steal his bike?" His brother replied, " are you kidding, why would they want that piece of junk?" They followed me home on foot. It was tough for them especially down hills. To this day, I still don't bring anything nice with me when I go places. The only things in my truck are old crappy tools that I find in the junkyard or make myself out of iron and steel, I like making wrenches and stuff in my basement from sturdy hunks of metal. They're not tempered but they won't bend when I use them. I wear no rings or watches, carry no phone and the only things in my wallet are my driver's license and insurance card. I only carry money when I am going to the store or some other place that requires me to spend, and that is always in my front pocket. I figure, why have nice things since you can't take them with you when you die. King Tut thought he could but they sniffed him out and picked him to the bone, even took those too.
