*WHY DON'T CHICKEN BREASTS HAVE NIPPLES?**
I had to ask? My husband said to me... if chickens are a bird...... why don't they fly? I countered that question with well....... if chickens have breasts....... why don't they have nipples??
Seems like a legitimate question to me........ So, I had to find out!
I found out that some millenia ago.... chickens did INDEED have nipples...... 6 to be exact! YUP, and they produced milk to feed their young. Although helpful to the chicks.... not helpful to the humans who were already enjoying the food quality of eggs. The shells were thinner, smaller, and striped! So, the chicks were often small and it double tasked the chicken who had to birth and then nurse. ( I know.... crazy!)
Sometime in 2500 BC a mysterious deadly virus from Asia killed off most of the egg laying species... except for a domesticated game hen that had a natural immunity to the disease.... So, supply and demand kicked in and the eggs that were precious and few became a HOT commodity! Raising chickens for eggs became a precious business.... and some individuals hired themselves out to go egg hunting!
So, naturally it was only a good business decision to breed chickens to make more eggs..... and make more chickens that ONLY layed eggs. Through intervention of breeding..... they bred the nipples right off the chickens. Thus, removing their need to produce milk AND ONLY eggs.......... TADA........ bigger eggs..... thicker shells........ and chickens with no nipples....... no more chicken milk.
(as strange as this sounds, it is all true!)
Now you know, as do I, why chicken breasts do not have nipples!
