What are grunion and why are they running on San Diego beaches?
🐠 🐠
Grunion are a species of fish that are fairly small in size- 6-8 inches long and leave the water at night to spawn on beaches during the spring and summer months throughout Southern California.
During their ‘runs’ you can expect to see hundreds, if not thousands of these silvery fish work their way up to the sand to spawn during high tide. It is a sight to see and fun for the whole family!
Bring flashlights, however, they are sensitive to light so be sure to use them sparingly. Be patient and plan to stay late to see the best ‘runs’!
April and May are not open season so you cannot fish for them however you can go to the beach and observe them. June through August the season opens back up so if you have a fishing license, you can fish for them.
Stay safe, have fun and check this off of your bucket list!
