Young, Yes....Republicans....Not so sure
Posted by jamess7717 WWW.townhall.com on Saturday, March 14, 2009 3:00:00 AM

I attended what I thought, was promoted as, a Young Republicans meeting in Tampa, Florida this week. I thought this was to be a meeting of substance, a chance to meet the future of the Republican Party. I thought this would be a place where intelligent and thoughtful younger people would be discussing issues and the future of the Republican Party. Instead, as the Monty Python troop would say...."And now for something completely different."

I heard of this meeting being mentioned on a local radio show and decided to take action. I am tired of yelling at the radio and television every time I hear about the things that are happening to my country. I decided that it was time to take action, real action. As an average American I wanted my voice to be heard. I spent about an hour writing an outline of the things I wanted to say to this "young" bright-eyed group of "young republicans." So, I arrived at the appointed meeting place, at the appropriate time. Outline in my pocket ready to verbally *#$#@ -slap these republicans about the party's past, present and future. Turns out, I'm the one who ended up being slapped with the cold hard reality of the party's future.

This was no meeting of the minds discussing the important issues of the day or the direction of the Republican Party is headed, no, this was nothing more than an after work social mixer. With a few exceptions, this was a meeting of young white spoiled twenty something republicans sitting around drinking their white wine, beer and mixed drinks. Needless to say, my planned speech never left my pocket.

After a few minutes, all of the "pretty people" went upstairs and I was made aware that there would be no constructive talk here. I was about to leave, when I noticed that a few didn't join in with the popular people. So, I invited myself to sit with them.
I quickly targeted the young lady of the small group who seemed to be somewhat agitated. This fair-skinned redhead is from Russia. All I had to hear her say was "Evil Government", and that's where the things went downhill.

To say that she, maybe an illegal alien, seemed out of place, would be an understatement. O.K., maybe her Visa is still valid. Other than to heap praise onto a nationally syndicated conservative talk show host, I thought she might fit in better at an Obama gathering. The four of us, er, actually mostly myself and the redhead, Anna, debated a dozen issues for two hours.

To say that her understandings of this country, its history and policies are a little nonsensical would be a massive understatement. Her views are so skewed, I needed a new eyeglass prescription and some lithium in order to follow her logic. Her naive rantings...pseudo-intellectual viewpoints (ala 9-11 Truthers), could be distilled (no pun intended), to this simple, and I do mean simple, statement..." The American Government is Evil and patriotism is a result of brainwashing and/or mental illness".

That's right boys and girls, all of us Americans who put our lives on the line everyday are brainwashed and mentally ill. So if you serve in the military or work as a fireman, police officer, cowboy or ballerina...scratch the ballerina, or anyone who works toward insuring the safety and security of the American people, oh, and fly that evil symbol known as "ol' Glory", are brainwashed or mentally ill. We are "programmed" from an early age by the "Evil Government" to be mindless zombies (not to be confused with Obama-zombies) engaged in supporting or actively participating in "unjust and illegal actions" by, you guessed it, the Evil Government.

Anna, went on to lecture me about psychological testing proving that altruistic behavior does not exist in the "normal" human psyche. She continued by saying that it is " A big B.S." that individuals, who are of course not brainwashed or mentally ill, commit selfless acts which might result in the individual loosing his or her life. Her wisdom included the statement that the evidence is exhibited in nature itself. Yes, we all know that mother bears "never" attack anyone or anything she sees as a threat to her cubs....wait maybe mother bears are mentally ill, or have been brainwashed by that damn Evil Government. -Damn you, you Evil Government! Damn you to hell!

So, to get back to Anna's theory, we are programmed ala brainwashing, or we are missing some "critical component" that has prevented us from becoming "normal" human beings, i.e. Daddy left mommy or mommy didn't love us enough. This causes one to gravitate towards the desire to engage in selfless acts like going into public safety or joining the military. Apparently, those of us who join the military do so, so that we may have the opportunity to kill other human beings. Or in her words, "...to murder old people, women and children". She refused to believe that some Americans, including me, a disabled veteran, have many reasons why we take on these life threatening careers. Oh, I know...its so she and others who share her opinion can sit around in yuppie bars and swill wine without fear of a bomb being detonated at the table next to them!

She couldn't comprehend the difference between, "I would lay down my life for my country," and, "I would lay down my life for my Evil Government." I gave her my personal definition. Laying down my life for my country means risking my life to insure the safety and security of not only my loved ones, but every citizen of this great nation and to insure the survival of our Constitutional Republican form of government. So that my children and future generations can live without fear of being blown-up while shopping or waiting on the school bus. A place where she and others of her "kind", you know the "normal" types, can sit on their collective asses, drink wine and bad mouth the country that keep them safe.

Does our country have problems and issues? Of course it does. I would agree with one valid point that managed to escape the great void between her ears. In the last 80 years, our Constitution has been knocked down and kicked around and twisted by activist courts, presidents and congress. As a consequence, our traditional moral and core values have waned over time. I do however, disagree with her statement that the "American Dream" is dead. It may be in critical condition, on a ventilator with a feeding tube, but it is far from dead.

Another person at the table, invited me to the "big meeting" at the end of the month. "This is where the real meat hits the grill." I asked if there is an open forum for the members or the public to address the group/club as to the direction of the party and what we need to do in order to take back our country. "Well, no." was the answer I got. "We have groups where we discuss things and then vote on them." WHAT?! "We then communicate our business to the state party about the issues and votes." WHAT?!

If this is the best that the Republican Party has to offer, you can count me out, not that it matters to them anyway...I'm one of those brainwashed mentally ill patriotic people. I truly fear for the future of not only this party, but more importantly, our country. Yes, no more screaming at the radio for me. Its way past time to take a stand and actively fight for my Conservative brainwashed mentally ill views, principles and core values. Look out...I'm coming to pick a fight with the mindless mediocre and status quo do-nothings. --Principles, not politics...Core Values, not wine and Coors.

James, I would like to provide a direct response to your accusations against the Tampa Bay Young Republicans. I am the current sitting Vice-President of the club.

I am glad that you took part in our event that day. The event is marketed as a monthly Meet and Greet. It is marketed as a purely social occasion in which to meet and get to know people within the Republican community.

As you plainly experienced, your open debate with Anna shows the serious minded nature of those within the club.

I do not appreciate your racist statement of "white", 20 something individuals. We are, in fact, aged well into our 30s and our demographics span across all colors, ages, and creeds. You sir, are perpetuating the Democratic view that we are a "white" party. Would you like to meet our club President, Adam Smith, a Korean born immigrant.; or how about our Marketing Director, Jonathan Torres, of proud Colombian heritage; or maybe Jose Herrero, our Membership director of Puerto Rican descent. Maybe my family, an Irish/Norwegian/German background. Maybe you would like to meet Dywan Washington, our Assistant Political Affairs Director, a proud American who happens to have a black skin color, but who refuses to be defined by that skin color. We have others in the club, people with Philippine blood, and many others from diverse backgrounds.

You sir, view with limited racist eyes, the club that you wanted to see, and not the one that exists.

As to whether we are serious minded Republicans, determined to renew our party and bring about new life to the Freedom loving people of Tampa, we will challenge our established Republican framework with new ideas and provide our party with the new path they have shown themselves to be lacking in...

Personally, I am 60% libertarian and 40% Republican. I am a fiscal and social conservative determined to have my voice heard within my county Party, and the nation as a whole.

Sir, you are sitting on the sidelines running your mouth, it is past time that you rose up and made it heard. Run for an office, explain your views, and if the people like it, they can vote for you.

Do not come to a social event determined to see the substance of Young Republicans and determine their "viability," without coming to our general meetings.

For example, yes, our monthly meetings are designed to conduct the business of the club and feature area candidates and speakers to speak and hear feedback from Young Republicans across Tampa Bay. If you want your voice to be heard, then come and vocalize it to the area leaders that we provide.

Just leave your racial bias at the door.

What about our other events? Do we just socialize? Or are we activists?

We have members who ran for Statewide office, we have members who ran campaigns, most, if not all my members live and breathe the values of the Republican Party, their hearts growing and beating with a fervor to preserve our rights of liberty and freedom of choice from a President and a Democratic Party so willing to strip those rights and take away free-will from our citizens.

Yet you dabbled in a pond determined not to see an ocean; even though that pond was, as Tampa Bay is, to the Gulf of Mexico.

Let me say a few words about our events. Just a quick glance at our calendar for 1 month will show you many things:

Veterans Volunteer Day (help our veterans),
Meet and Greet (1 a month),
Tampa Tea Party (Joining with other voices to cry out against government spending),
HCRP meeting (official meeting of the Republican Party of Hillsborough, show a voice to our Party),
Beach Bash (beach party to meet and get to know personally our elected officials in a casual setting with people from across Tampa Bay),
Marketing and WebSite Meeting (Provide technological method to stoke the fires of debate and activism of Young Republicans across the county)

Future events include Leadership Workshops, Campaign Schools, National Conventions, State Conventions, Campaign Elections, Issue Debate Forums, and the Quarterly Speaker Series (most recently Marco Rubio, running for US Senate)

James, become an informed individual, not a man on a pulpit, built on a sandy foundation.

Lastly, may I address your view of a friend, and a long-time Young Republican. Anna, our Russian member has sought a venue to try to provide a larger world view to our members. She desires to help enlighten some of our members to the world's opinions. We educate our children with toys like GI Joes, a toy specifically designed to be pro-American and brain-wash our children. It instills the values of personal choices, as well as the effects of those choices.

Do not devalue her opinion based upon the simpleminded view that, because she is a foreigner, her mind is so skewed, that she does not have insight.

Sir, my mind is skewed, towards personal liberty, a right to life, and a right to the protection of personal property, as well as the freedom of speech and religion.

Stop seeing the world as you want to see it, and come experience my club which will give you a much different reality than one that has been fed to you.

By respecting each other, and working together, we can show the current Republican leaders the strength of the next generation to take up their cause.

I'm coming to pick a fight with the mindless mediocre and status quo do-nothings. --Principles, not politics -- says James. Well, James where have you and your friends been for the past few decades while the great government have been working for your sake? Certainly the crises and all the mind opening & blowing facts did not happen overnight. All of a sudden you woke up and believe that you must act to save your country; where have you been; what have you been doing? The principles and fundamentals are being played around with and you are yelling on the radio - I am afraid you have not been as efficient or effective; does not seem to be working - I suggest that you reconsider your tactics. What puts a smile on my face is so many Americans are now screaming that it is time to save this country; where have you been? Playing video games? Shopping at the mall? Devaluing education? Why all of a sudden it is important to you? Yes, this is right! Common man lacks vision and foresight!
