Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Houston Finally Clinched, And That's Huge

Posted 03-26-2015 at 04:01 PM by case44

As you've seen me writing for many months about this, you can all tell that I've been impatiently waiting. I wondered if it was ever going to come along.

Reports from the Texas Transportation Commission are in, and it is now official: Interstate 69 is now complete through the city of Houston. I can't even begin to tell you that this is huge! In a matter of weeks and months, you'll start seeing the red, white, and blue shields emblazoned on overhead signs and new assurance markers at ground level on the remaining 11.9-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 59, from one end of Loop 610 to another. That's what we've all waited for for about two years.

I-69 is now clinched for the mileage in Houston. That's all of Harris County, plus portions of Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. More work needs to be done, but travelers on I-45 and I-10 can now see that these highways can now officially intersect with I-69.

Huge. That's all I can say. It's huge. It's a very large step toward furthering Texas' newest interstate into reality and improving the movement of goods from one highway to another. This is cause for much celebrating, but the work is far from over. Houstonians now have something new to be totally proud of.

I can't believe that not even one Houston television station has reported this as yet. The new interstate designation is news in that city, and no one's reporting it??? Not even an article on KTRH radio, either.

People do read signs more than some folks think. Not everyone, obviously, but some. Once everyone sees what the new designation is and what it means to those, I think people will eventually adjust. As soon as the road is completed, a lot of us will be quite surprised.

Update: I was just in Houston last week. Still no signage, roadside or overhead, yet on the inside-the-loop portion of U.S. 59 that's been converted. Could be a funding issue holding things up, but it takes time to get it all made. Plus, they'd have to close some lanes to get the signs in the downtown and Midtown areas put up.
