Just out of curiosity, why do mods merge threads?

There are no database limitations I know of as to how many threads there could be. I imagine there could be limitations to the number of threads based upon the chosen design of the database or the implementation of the software over the DB.

Are threads merged for some kind of convenience factor or is it for a technical reason?

Sometimes, as an example news items are posted in the same thread at similar times, so they might get merged. Sometimes posted on separate threads, they can get merged. Sometimes two or three posts in several several threads of the same subject, they get merged. Etc, etc, etc...

There are database limitations, I don't recall under what conditions...
