Hello all,

Recently I've begun attending some classes at U of Akron. I am contemplating moving to Akron due to the commute. It sounds like there are some very affordable places to live in Akron. However, I am a young woman and am also hearing that Akron is not safe (even worse than Cleveland?). Are there any areas to look for housing that are both safe and affordable? Thanks for any tips!

I am not sure what would be considered affordable, but the Derbydale area, where my sister lives, is an area of new homes.

My wife graduated from Akron U. After her graduation, we lived in Green for 10 years prior to our move to NC.

It is about 15 minutes south of Akron U., right off of I-77 just north of Canton-Akron airpoirt. It is very safe and is a very growing area.

I would not want to live anywhere in the city of Akron. Other close suburan areas to look would be Talmadge, Stow/Munroe Falls, and Copley/Montrose/Fairlawn area.

Thank you both for the suggestions! I will look into Derbydale and also to the suburban areas mentioned by arnoldti.

I went to UA about 10 years ago and I lived in an apartment just off campus. It was VERY expensive and walking to work (off campus) was very dangerous. I would never let my own kids live there. I don't think my own parents would have let me live there if they had realized how dangerous Akron is. I hate to say this, but if you can, transfer to Kent or OSU or really, any other University. (edit OSU is probably just as dangerous as Akron, but I think it's a better value educationally. It's much more prestigious than Akron for about the same tuition costs)

Those are all nice communities, but very pricey for a college student. Not to mention, no matter where you live you still have to drive in Akron and park in a parking garage and walk across campus. Many students have been mugged doing less. Sorry to be such a downer on UA but I feel very strongly about it.
