I got my first room comps from the Wind Creek Casino, but I don't plan to spend all day and night in the casino.

Can someone recommend any great local eating places? Bars? Sites of interest? Parks or nature trails? Coffee shops? People-watching? Prison tours?

I'd like to visit within an hour or so of Atmore, but don't really plan to go to Mobile or Pensacola. I might have to go to the beach, just because it's close...

Atmore is a small town, so there's not much to do outside of the casino.

For parks and good a pick-nick spot there is Little River State Park about ten miles north of the casino.

Davids Catfish House on the south side of town is pretty good if you like catfish and shrimp, their cheese grits are good too.

Pintoli's Italian Cafe on Main St is also good. Menu (Atmore) (http://www.pintolis.com/Pintolis%20Web%20Page_files/Page528.htm - broken link)

Annie's Community Cup is our only coffee shop.

You don't want to go to the bars here. LOL

Thanks, I was hoping to hear from you, snl. I've driven through Atmore a few times (I like to take different routes to / from the beach - last trip I took Baldwin 61 and 112 - lots of piney woods), this time I'll have some time to explore the area.

Is Annie's downtown? What about a good breakfast place (does David's serve breakfast)?

I thought I might go see Fort Mims around Tensaw.

I didn't see any bars while driving through, but now you've got my curiousity piqued and I might just want to go to those bars you're thinking about

Yes, Annie's is downtown, near the railroad tracks.

For breakfast you could try The Anchor Cafe, it's nothing fancy, just a small town restaurant, but good food and reasonable (if you Google it it'll be listed on Ridgeley St, but they moved around the corner to Trammel St.). Two women run the whole place.

If you want to experience old time Atmore, go to Buster's for lunch. That place has been there for at least 50 years, and many of the old timers still go there to sit and drink coffee and gossip, lol. I have eaten there all of my life. They have a good lunch menu, but no breakfast. Buster's Restaurant - Atmore | Urbanspoon

If you want to drink, the lounges inside of the casino are your best bet, and they are very nice. The smaller bars around town are full of the same old riff raff, drunks, and the occasional meth head. Not my type of thing. ; )

Atmore now has draft beer!

The Alabama Wing House has I believe six on tap (not bad considering before that we had NONE in town) including some Yeungling and Shocktop. Last time I was home visiting the folks I had lunch there every day! Lol

People have already covered most of the other good places to eat in town, I'd also add Dean's Drive through on N. Main. If you're coming in from the casino as you start to get into town it'll be on the left. Good burgers and fries.

As for stuff to do. Well... uh.... you could always drive 'the loop'. Start off at the Spur, then slowly drive through Old Kmart Parking Lot, then New Kmart Parking Lot, BC Moore's Parking Lot, and then over to the City Pool. Look for friends. If you don't see a bunch of cars you recognize, rinse and repeat.

Honestly, not a whole hell of a lot to do there. For my generation anyone who could leave has left. Town's dying. I like to visit my family, and go play around on our farm but I generally spend most of my time in Mobile and P'cola.

Sounds like you grew up here during the 90's. Old Kmart is now Freds and Burkes, new Kmart is now Marvins and Peebles, old BC Moores is now Dirt Cheap, and the Spur is now a Chevron.

Yep, left in 97 to go off to High School. Went to college at Spring Hill though, so I kinda came back for a few years. Or least was visiting semi-regularly. Now days I make it back either Thanksgiving or Xmas (we alternate with my wife's family). Seems every time I'm back two old places have closed and one new one sprung up. :/
