My family and I are currently in the lower 48. We have been "wandering" looking at other places to live. After 18 years spent in Alaska, the dark winters were starting to take a toll on me. The problem is this. I am constantly comparing every place we look to Alaska! I know there is no place like it in the states. The lifestyle is so unique. I miss my freezer full of salmon and love to fish. I miss friends and community. But I try to keep reminding myself of the darkness and other issues which prompted the looking. Right now my children are really wanting to go back and I am so much missing friends, etc, that I cannot put all into proper perspective. I am afraid of moving back(this would be the second move back), yet drawn to it as well. Help!

Well, if you love salmon and fishing...have you considered the Pacific Northwest as an alternative?

Yep, little pockets of the northwest come pretty close to AK, particulary in central and northeastern WA, northern Idaho, and western Montana. In WA, check out the upper Methow and Okanogan Valleys and the area around Republic in the Okanogan.

I can talk you out of moving to Alaska. I am leaving Alaska in 30 days... exactly. Although the summers are great here..... beyond great.... amazing. The Winters are long dark and cold. Your Heating bill begin to inch closer to $300/month and to get out of state for a family vacation you are looking at a minimum of $400/RT each ticket..... and that's for Seattle. Want to go somewhere warmer... you are looking at $600/RT. Eating out is about $4 - $5 more per plate.... it adds up. Gas for your car will cost more and your car will not last as long here. Big name concert ours do not come through here and Anchorage's definition of pro sports is the Alaska Aces (Alaska Wild Arena Football Team is now defunct).

Honestly, that's all I can really think of, well other than the number of drunks, rapes and domestic abuse.

Summer in Alaska is the best summer on the planet. Unfortunately its very short. If it was 2 months longer I would consider staying.

Oh lordy, me too! I used to take my kids over to the Methow every summer for camping in friend's apple orchard on the river, pig roasting in the pit, drifting in innertubes and teepie creeping at the rodeo and suicide race. Do they still run the suicide race? Been YEARS but, oh what fun!

Oh, I'm sorry. I love Alaska! The only bad part is Anchorage.

Oh, but I'm so glad Anchorage is there. Keeps the riffraff outta the bush.

I couldn`t move there from what you just stated about the winters. Not only dark but to cold and snowy for months.

Our winters are what good friends, good food and good wine are for!
