There must be Sally123, as those bikes are everywhere. Our newspaper here in Fairbanks, has a whats happening section, and I see a group of mountain bikers ride every Tuesday eve. We even have extremists that like to ride in the winter with studded tires, and little blinking red lights. This tends to worry automobile drivers quite a bit as there isn't much of a lane for the bikes and we all fear they will slip on the icy road and get run over. There are several trails in the State parks that accomidate bikes and they style of riding your talking about. I would suggest you call Beaver Sports and see if they know of the club or trails available. They sell some pretty high end mountain bikes so could at least give you a lead. There number is 907 479-2494. Also try a search for State of Alaska online.

On the Kenai Peninsula there are many groomed mountain trails. From Cooper Landing to Sterling there are many. Not real sure about the rest of the state as I've never ridden anywhere else. Watch for bears on those blind corners tho. Can be a real heart stopper!

Question Mountain bike vs Road Bike

Hi,
I know this thread started quite a while ago. Still hoping for some info My husband and I are thinking of moving to AK for about 5 months this summer. (traveling healthcare) We both love to bike and I am trying to decide if it would be better to have a mountain bike or a road bike. Everone mentions that Bears are a risk on the trails.. so what exactly does one do if they run into a bear?????
Are the roads bike friendly w/ large shoulders?
Thanks

Ah! I forgot to say! Actually we don't know for sure but our choice would be in the Anchorage/Wasila area. My husband is a traveling physical therapist so we wouldn't know where we were going till mid-March. There are usually jobs around Seward and Homer as well. Sorry that I can't be more specific.

"Everone mentions that Bears are a risk on the trails.. so what exactly does one do if they run into a bear?????"

STOP! Don't run! Stick together with riding partner, wave arms, talk to bear in calm voice, yield to bear, back away slowly to yield trail if necessary.

Lots of mountain bikers ride the Resurrection Trail from Hope to Cooper Landing on the Kenai:
TRAILMONKEY'S Resurrection Pass Virtual Tour (http://www.trailmonkey.com/USpages/alaska/akbike33.htm - broken link)

Trailmonkey has some great Alaskan mt. bike routes on its site with virtual tours.

In Anchorage Bicentennial Far North has great mt. bike trails.

Anchorage has a great trail system for rd. bikes, coastal trail, Kincaid, Chester Creek, APU, - & a trail along the Glen all the way up to Birchwood.
