POINT HOPE, Alaska — Spring means murre eggs and bowhead whales. Summer is seals and salmon and berries. Fall and winter are a time to track caribou.

And then there is that other season here at the edge of the earth, the one that never seems to end.
It is called basketball season, and it, too, has become crucial to existence.

I was not going to post this article because I know at least one person is going to be telling his story of when he played on a basketball team in Point Hope and averaged 167 points a game while playing with a fractured ankle, four cracked ribs, sprained wrist, broken collar bone, and a severe concussion.

But it is a good article so I posted it anyway.

To get the eggs, the Inupiaq people have to climb straight up 600 foot sheer cliffs with the birds dropping rocks and attacking you. These eggs are the size of a very large pear.

Kunuknowruk - artist, scholar, thinker, friend and host; mammoth tusks and the dream couch

This is Kunuknowruk, also known as Pete Lisbourne, a treasured friend and the man who hosted me during my trip to Tikigaq, also known as Point Hope. For those of you familiar with my book, Gift of the Whale, he is the man who you saw picking murre eggs off the 900-foot cliffs of Cape Thompson, and then resting on the very edge at the very top with a cache of eggs in front of him.
