We need a place to go shooting!
I have been accustomed to going to places where a person could go do some plinking, Knik "boat launch", Buffalo Mine, Jonesville and the mines above there, King Mountain, along the Knik river, Ji, creek, etc.

Jan and I just came back from Jonesville and lo and behold, there's a gate across the road up into the old mines, can't go shooting there now. Buffalo Mine is missing the bridge across Moose Creek. Can't go to the Knik boat launch, Zero Lake road has been closed to plinking, the Isaac Walton range is now membership only and you still have to pay to shoot there. Rabbit Creek is always crowded and a helluva long way out to go from Wasilla.

Land of the free my a** .

we can't do that our neighbours would be right in there complaining. Its just kind of weird, this great state has miles and miles and miles of state land but its so very difficult to get anywhere.

You might try posting your query in the Outdoor Shooting Forums: Alaska Shooting

But, yes, there's less and less places to go and shoot. The problem is those that mess up a good thing by leaving trash everywhere at the shooting areas. That and the fact that there's more and more growth... So that empty field is now a housing development.

All the private ranges, both indoor and outdoor, are going to charge a fee. If you prefer not to pay a fee, find some State land, like the Palmer Hay Flats, and set up your own range. Make certain you are at least a quarter mile from the highway or any homes in the area, and you are perfectly legal. When you set up your own range it would be a good idea to know where your rounds will go after they hit the target. Do not shoot towards the water. A sandy embankment in the background is preferred.

In short, there are lots of places you can go plinking, anywhere there are State lands, you just need to do a little planning.

The hay flats are closed to target shooting, period. Anything designated a refuge is also closed.

Knik River Public Use Area
http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/krpua/pdf/...ctions_map.pdf

Maud Road off of the Old Glenn Hwy. Drive to the end of the paved road and continue to drive down the dirt road pass Jim Lake. You will encounter Knik River Public Use Access Area No Targeting Shooting signs as well as Eklutina Native Corp No Trespassing signs on the way. Eventually you will enter an area that has signs that are Knik River Public Use Area you can shoot there. On the left you will see different targets from people who do not know how to clean up after themselves. Up the hill to the left as you are facing the mountains the trees have been cleared up to a 100 yards.
