There are parts of Russia that get colder than parts of Alaska and vice versa. These are both, ya know, kinda huge places with a pretty big range of "how cold does it get".

If you are asking which area gets the coldest at its extremes, is is Russia. I believe parts of Siberia are the coldest places on Earth with permanent residents.

Moscow and the larger cities in western Russia don't get as cold as Alaska. However, Siberia is frequently colder than Alaska.

Like others said, it just depends on where you are.

So called Pole of Cold (PC) is the area with the lowest air temperatures at the earth's surface in the hemisphere, or around the globe. In the Northern Hemisphere PC is located in Yakutia (Russia) and Greenland. There is an absolute minimum temperature of -68 ° C In Yakutia (Verkhoyansk city) and Oymyakon city, where even during the period of warming (1933) it is observed temperature of -68 ° C and colder years it can drop to -71 ° C.
Sorry for my poor English.

Not poor at all. Great post, in fact. And very interesting. I'm going to read up on these to see what's like for the people living in those places. As one who likes hot weather, it's fascinating for me that others can thrive in such cold extremes.

That Yakutia cold spot also makes all of Northern China freeze during the winter. Alaskan cold has less effect its southern neighbors IMHO. BTW, as an English teacher - is it more cold, not more colder -)??
