Hi folks, I am new to the forums. Been reading on here for about a year and time to join.

If you had a choice of business to open in Alaska. What would it be?
I was thinking of a Machine Shop/Weld Shop.

Open a saloon where legal and you'll get wealthy. Machine shop? Maybe, depends on location...

Depending on the locale / population:

Walgreen's or similar pharmacy, espresso stands with 1) good coffee and 2) cute little 20 somethings as baristas (nothing slimy, just good marketing--no matter the coffee must be good!!), outside of Anchorage other chain sit downs would do good (of course, such places then creep towards being like Anchorage, which is working towards a lower 48 west coast city...not desirable for many), etc.

If the capital isn't there for the pharmacy or the restaurant, the espresso stands quickly become cash cows it seems (not first hand, but second hand from several contacts that own local ones).

Unions are big in Alaska, at least in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau I imagine. It means that there are a lot of certified welders and welding shops. There are several very large welding shops in Fairbanks, and numerous smaller welding and machine shops. But we could use some proficient gunsmiths in town.

Any decent stylist could set up shop in most places in rural Alaska and do quite well.

If I had the funds, I'd be opening a photo shop out here in valley. There is nothing out here at all.

Anything but a fish processing plant or a restaurant, especially if they are right across the street from each other and share a telephone/credit card line and don't have any parking and idjits thick as flies everywhere.

My ideal business is one of those drive through expresso stands but instead of coffee I'd have daiquiris and martinis and little jars of moonshine.
