Hello,

I prefer Guilderland because it's more built up but the rents for a 1 bedroom apartment are a bit higher than what I can afford. I looked in East Greenbush and it is more affordable and has shopping nearby (I want to be within 10 minutes of a Target, Walmart, Best Buy etc). Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of East Greenbush? And if I'd be missing out on anything by not moving to Guilderland? I am 34 and do not have children so schools aren't a factor. I had considered the west Endicott area near Glendale Park (shopping in Vestal) because I have family near there however I read that it's not very built up and looks a bit run down so even though it's much cheaper to live there I have high doubts. Thank you.

Endicott and Vestal are in the Binghamton area. Vestal is actually a very nice area with plenty of shopping along Vestal Drive. Johnson City north of Route 17 has plenty of shopping and is a fine area of that village. So, that is a completely different area that is a couple of hours away.

Guilderland is closer to everything, which is definitely an advantage. And by "closer" I mean like 5 minutes less than the drive would be from East Greenbush. I don't know much about East Greenbush personally, but from what I've heard on the news lately about them losing their casino bid (and celebrating), there are definitely some financial issues within the community, roads that need fixing, etc. So that would explain the lower cost of living. Guilderland has a wide variety of people living there, from state workers and SUNY employees to regular suburban folks. You're more likely to find just regular suburban folks in East Greenbush.

Yes it is a very different area I wanted to be there due to family but i prefer the area of Albany. Would you say that Johnson City is nicer than West Endicott?

From what I'm reading East Greenbush seems to be the way to go if I decide to move there due to the lower prices.

Are you trying to live closer to family in Endicott or are you specifically looking into these two Albany area communities?

I don't think that West Endicott is bad. Central Endicott is the only area of Endicott that people should be leery of for environmental and crime reasons, relatively speaking in terms of the latter. There is a poster that can be more specific that I could be though. Johnson City is similar and both are former company towns with a blue collar vibe in parts, but can be very suburban or have solid/nice walkable areas as well. Endwell is a nice suburb in between Endicott and Johnson City, with Vestal across the Susquehanna River from those 3 communities. These 2 streetviews are examples of big box shopping in the Binghamton area:

Oakdale Mall - Welcome to Oakdale Mall - 601-635 Harry L. Drive Suite 17, Johnson City, NY 13790

The Shoppes at Pierce Hill - SHOPPES HOME - Retail Shopping Center - Vestal, New York Shops at The Shoppes

Johnson City has the area's only Wegmans and indoor mall in that specific area of the village around Harry L Drive and Reynolds Road. Vestal's shopping is on Vestal Parkway, not Drive, btw. Parkway Plaza has a Target and Town Square Mall has a movie theater and a Wal*Mart, other stores in both shopping centers.

In terms of the Albany area, what about the town of Colonie?
