My darling wife has a big birthday coming up and the perfect chocolate cake is a central ingredient in the festivities. Where in ABQ would you recommend that I get this item?

Thanks for the suggestions.

There's a place called Just a Bite at Paseo and San Pedro. I love their cupcakes, and they scaled up a strawberry wine cupcake into cake size for my wife's birthday and it was fantastic. I can vouch for their chocolate cupcakes and say that the scaled up version I had lived up to the taste of its diminutive cousin, but I haven't had the full on chocolate cake. Hope this helps, and have fun!

Just a Bite Bakery

This thing that says home is the link to the bakery. No idea how to make it say what it is. (Fixed, Poncho_NM)

I haven't tried their chocolate cake, but everything we've had from there has been yummy. It's the Enchanted Bakery on 528, just south of Northern.

For ready-made cakes, Whole Foods also has some really good options.

1. I'm only answering because you called your "darling wife" darling wife instead of DW or LW or BFW or MP etc...

2. I asked my wife who works for a large organization which has a lot of events and she said for First Class, go with:
ABC Cake Shop and Bakery
3. Have you ever tried to cook a cake? If not you can learn, maybe. Start practicing now for the future? Go with Pillsbury cake mixes...

Yes! I had them make a chocolate cake for me... was pricey, but very very good.
