Hi,
it's me again. We are taking the South West Chief to ABQ in April. (we are looking to move there in a year) Any thing we should check out? Inexpensive but clean/safe motels? What's the best way to get around? Should we take a bus or cab from Amtrak to the motel? Should we rent a car? Is that expensive? I do want to see Old Town, hear some local music, buy some yarn, and see the beauty of the area. We also want to take a balloon ride!!! I love history and nature, especially the South West. My future In-Laws would like it if we moved to Prescott, Az where they are....but I love the charm of New Mexico!!! It will be cool to be the tourist this time! We are from So.Cal. I am very excited, so far I love what I have learned about ABQ!! I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The train station is just a couple blocks S of Central where you can catch a bus that run frequently down Central to Old Town. If you have much luggage, it might be worth it to take a cab.
I recommend renting a cab, most of Albuquerque is pretty spread out.
Mortimer, that hotel is now the Hotel Albuquerque.
There is a motel 6 on the very north east side of town I-25 and Alameda off of the frontage road that would be extremely safe and have some interesting stuff around. You would be close the balloon fiesta area (musuem) and the Tram. However, you would be a distance away from Downtown, Old Town, Etc.
Wouldn't recommend it. As a matter of fact, I have a hard time thinking of ANY hotels located on Central that I could recommend.
In the Old Town area, your best choices would be the Hotel Albuquerque or the Best Western Rio Grande Inn. If you have budget constraints, I would strongly suggest you check out Priceline. You'd be surprised what kind of deals you can get, especially 3 or 4 star hotels Downtown.
LOL if you are taking the Chief, who knows when it will arrive really? Amtak Nos. 3 & 4 tend to be NOT on time, god love 'em, especially 4.
Rent a car! Abq is layed out like a grid, mainly, it is really easy to drive around there! There's always a good ground route to take.
I hope you have fun and enjoy your train ride and the city!!!
