It looks like we might be meeting up with at least one company while we're visiting next week. I know what to wear in my profession, so no question there. However, my husband isn't sure how to dress for his prospective interviews.

He'll be interviewing as a mechanical engineer, senior position, in the private sector. Is the dress a bit casual, so just a blazer, slacks, and a tie? Or is it more conservative, so a full on suit? Or...?

How about if he ends up with an interview in the government sector? Would interview attire be the same or more conservative, perhaps?

Thanks in advance!

When I was a government hiring manager/supervisor, most people wore suits to the interviews. We did have some people come in business casual attire but for the most part, suits for men and women. I think you should treat the interview as you would in any other location then adapt to the office culture/office style of dress once you're on-board.

Business casual. Suits are entirely unnecessary here unless you're in the law sector. Those who say otherwise are retired. Albuquerque is a very casual and laid back city.

(edit to add: Definitely business casual in targeting a private sector mechanical engineering position. They want to foremost see his experience, and this his team cohesion).

I'm not retired so this isn't accurate Depends on the sector and the office. Not every office is business casual

Thanks!

It's hard to know because we've only worked in big cities on the west coast, both in professional positions, and full-on suits at an interview would be almost embarrassing overkill, especially in the summer. A contemporary blazer, tie, and slacks is all my husband has ever worn to all his interviews so far. However, I've heard the west coast can be casual compared to the rest of the country, so it's really helpful to hear everyone's experiences and opinions.

Keep 'em coming! I check this thread a couple times a day.
