I noticed this today on my drive up to Santa Fe: the sky doesn't look as bright and blue as it used to. Did I not notice this before? I lived here from 2000-2004 and had not really noticed the smog. I appreciate the bright sunny sky, it just seems like it used to be bluer.

I wasn't there today so can't answer your question, but believe me, unless things have changed a whole lot since June, Albuquerque doesn not have smog...I don't mean they have none, but not compared to really smoggy areas. There will be a haze anyplace occassionally even here in NWAr.

Yeah I kind of wondered if I was overreacting. It does seem to me that the NM sky used to be a lot bluer though.

eh, it depends on the weather, the humidity, the winds. I wouldn't make any conclusions based off a couple isolated days.

Sometimes we get smog... increase in fireplace usage, low wind, etc. We're not immune to smog... although that would be nice.

Maybe the fact that the wind was blowing hard all night. That kicks up a lot of dust into the atmosphere.

I was out of town (in Texas) for over a week, so I don't know what the sky looked like prior to getting back yesterday. I did notice slightly hazy conditions in Ruidoso yesterday. I think we're looking at some smoke. There are a couple of major fires in Arizona and southern California. There are also quite a few prescribed burns going on this time of year. I saw one in progress yesterday near Ruidoso. A mid-tropospheric (10-20k feet above us) high pressure system is centered over northern Arizona. The clockwise circulation around this feature is sending smoky air from southern Arizona and southern California northward into Nevada, then eastward into Colorado, and southward into New Mexico. This too shall pass...and the deep, blue New Mexico sky that we all love will favor us once again.

Santa Fe is actually the 2nd cleanest city in America for air quality, and Albuquerque is 9th.

Today was a real pretty day. I am glad I moved back... wonder why I ever left.
