My kids recently went to the ABQ biopark and saw some silkworms. They fell in love with them, particularly when the worms are eating the mulberry leaves. Does anyone know where I can get some fresh mulberry leaves in Albuquerque? I heard mulberry trees are prohibited in ABQ, unless it’s fruitless. That makes them even harder to find. I understand that silkworms can live with powdered chow, but it’s not as fun to watch anymore. I’m ordering the eggs online and pretty soon we will need fresh mulberry leaves.
Fruitless mulberry are very easy to find in Albuquerque. In my experience, they outnumber normal Mulberry trees 100-1.
There are probably over a hundred fruitless Mulberry trees in the UNM/Nob Hill area, predating the ordinance against new plantings. The only ones I know that are not growing on private property are a row of 5 or 6 of them on the southwest side of the 100 block of Harvard Dr SE in the Harvard Mall/Bricklight District, right across from El Patio restaurant.
Of course within the next couple of weeks, their leaves are going to turn a brilliant yellow before subsequently falling from the limbs.
Last I knew, there was a huge mulberry tree in the median on Ridgecrest...as you head towards the "chevy on a stick," it is in the median section just past the big park on the left (just past the left turn that runs along the side of the park.)
