I've posted before about how I am NOT, um, a connoisseur when it comes to alcohol. I tend to buy really cheap liquor (whiskey, vodka, rum, tequila, whatever) because I add fruity mixers (strawberry, lime, mango, watermelon, peach, others I am forgetting!) and LOTS of ice and blend them all together, so it seems a waste to buy good, expensive liquor that you are basically going to drown with sugared mixers.
But I was at the liquor store a few days ago buying a cheap bottle of rum (Mr. Boston, the best rum $10 can buy, LOL ) and I saw a bottle of 151-proof rum (Cruzan IIRC). Honestly, my first thought, was, WTF? Really?! But it wasn't too expensive ($20) so I bought it.
When I got home and looked it up online, just about every site wrote about it being for MIXED DRINKS since it is way too strong to drink by itself. So I have been USING it (very sparingly) in mixed drinks. But it seems a bit silly to me ... couldn't I just add more of my cheap (80-proof) rum and have the same effect? Or am I missing something important?
(I actually HAVE bought a couple of expensive bourbons for sipping, but I STILL don't really like the taste AND I get tipsy on them SO quickly that I don't buy them very often. I'm not really ever looking to get drunk -- just mildly relaxed. And since I love the fruity mixers, those mixed drinks -- daiquiris, margaritas, whiskey sours, etc. -- have been fine.)
Anyone else drunk extremely-high-proof alcohol? What did you think?
Its not meant to drink it straight, although I know plenty of people who drink Balkan Vodka (176 proof/88% alcohol) and Polish-made "Spirytus" vodka - (192 proof/96% alcohol) - the strongest bottle of liquor sold in the world, straight from the bottle
Yours truly loves it with hot tea

We lucked upon a small stash of Spirytus alcohol and used it to make one of our annual batches of homemade limoncello. Popular opinion was that it made a tastier batch than when we use everclear.
Oh, the Spiritus is great to make homemade liqueurs. In the States, I use Everclear to make X-Mas gifts.
(I posted several recipes on the Beverages forum)
Not sure which is better, but Spiritus is simply not available here.
