I have had an allergy to shrimp & lobster for many years...what happens is, I break out all over my chest, back and face with hives...that burn. Now here's the thing

Have always loved seafood, and eaten seafood, this just started say, 14 - 15 years ago. Was down the shore with my girlfriend, her hubby had gone out and bought us U-peel em shrimp. I started itching and she really got scared and said, it must be the shrimp. Next time was the following Christmas holiday, I bought a nice big lobster tail...couldn't even finish it....same thing...

so, fast forward to today. The past two years, I've been meeting my sister at a local chinese buffet which she loves....now they serve the piddley tiny little u-peel em shrimp...and if I eat them, I break out all over....

But whenever I go to my cousin's she purchases really lovely large shrimp from a seafood market, and I'll eat two and wait an hour, (cuz if I'm going to have a allergy attack, it happens pretty quickly) and then eat two more, etc. Nothing?

Crazy isn't it....and yes, I know I shouldn't chance it, but I do....many years ago, oh maybe 30 or more, I had to go and have a kidney test, which required a dye inserted into my veins. I broke out in several hives then, not much, but they wouldn't allow me to go home and told me to never get any kind of dye again.

I know shrimp have iodine in them...

Crazy isn't it?

I've read on the internet that there are a lot of people out there like me....?

What could be the difference? Does anyone know?

There is obviously something in different seafoods that can trigger allergy reactions. I can eat all seafoods as far as I know. Today may go out for sushi with friend. I'm sure there are explanations but I'm not willing to dig. Take care.

The fact that you've never had anaphylaxis from your allergy doesn't mean that it can't happen at some point. You're taking a dangerous risk when you eat it. If you want to know more about why you react to some crustaceans and not to others, seeing an allergist who specializes in food allergies is your best bet.

To whomever left nasty rep, this is not my issue so OP may want to check further. We all need to do our own research pretty much. I don't seek out reps. And I wanted to comment as the post didn't get any comments. So... Thanks.

Or just avoid crustaceans. I would.

Me too. I don't eat anything I've had an allergic reaction to. It's just too scary to do it, besides, reactions hurt a lot sometimes.

Talk to a good allergist.

He/she will most likely to tell you to avoid all seafood because there is cross-contamination in how they catch, clean, prepare and store seafood.
