One place I know of in Ecuador, Vilcabamba, has several hundred expats. Cotacachi is supposed to have around 100. I think Samaipata, Bolivia has quite a few along with expats from other countries. Any others that have a year'round U.S. population in towns smaller than say 20,000? I know there a number of places in Mexico and Central America but am curious about South America. Thanks.
You named the places I was going to mention. The expat population in Cotacachi is growing steadily, and they're driving the price of real estate up, too, fyi.
I know it's not South America but Lake Chapala, Mexico region has been known for expat community.
I think Boquette, Panama has a decent number of US Expats.

not south america, like you said, but these are still good answers !
Thanks for the info. I like what I'm reading about Salinas, Ecuador. Not too big, plenty of amenities.
Salinas is a tourist/vacation spot. I don't know how many expats you'll find living there permanently. My understanding is that you have to go to La Libertad for a lot of amenities too cause it's more of a real city with stuff like grocery stores, etc. It's not a far distance though. 2-3 miles I think. Take this with a grain of salt though. I've never been to Ecuador.. yet

The new mall with multiplex is right on the Salinas/La Libertad border. It's all academic though, have decided to stick with Mexico.

I spend a year teaching English at a university in Guayaquil where I encountered quite a few American expats. Salinas is a tourist/vacation spot but I never actually visited it.
Boquete, Panama is definitely full of expats. Real estate prices are considerably higher than anywhere else other than Panama City.
Boquete also is physically more attractive and has a cooler climate than much of the rest of Panama.
