As a possible future Xpat, which of these two cities would be better and why? May not live IN the cities, but the general area. Looking for positives of each including medical care, climate, ect.

Great and interesting choices OP. I've only been in the airport for both cities. Would love to try them both as a place to live and/or visit.

I have never been to either yet. Seems like Panama City is a more progressive city, but that doesn't make San Jose bad. I am surprised more haven't brought comments.

From speaking to people that have been to both: Panama City is a boom town with the canal and it is a major banking center. So lots of economic opportunities. Just look at the modern skyline...it is like the Miami of Latin America. I've always been struck by the beauty of the setting from the airport: tall, modern buildings set against the ocean.

In addition, the old town area is finally getting spruced up so there is some historical/colonial flavor that is interesting. Also, English is very common in Panama City given the history and presence of the canal. Both countries are two of the more highly developed countries in Latin America, so the human development index is relatively good. The roads and infrastructure are also good by Latin American standards.

Not sure of the crime rates for each city; however, overall Costa Rica has less crime than Panama. But I would not let crime rates make the decision for me. You can be safe in either place.

San Jose looks nice from the air because of the mountains that surround it. I don't know much about the city. I'd love to try either one as a place to live or visit. I am sure they'd both be great experiences.

As far as cities go, Panama city has far more to offer than San Jose, but as far as countries go, Costa Rica is superior to Panama.

Agreed. Also, Panama City has become much more expensive in the last decade or so. Living in San Jose or elsewhere in Costa Rica is more affordable.

People live in and around San Jose for the weather. Its not the most scenic city in the world, but at least has mountain views. There are parts that are heavily expat and you will hear a lot of English, but not far away not a word of English.

San Jose is one of the ugliest capitals. There's no way around that fact.
