To arrest former politician VP Jorge Glas. This seems to be very rare.

Completely insane. I can't believe there is not more international reaction to this. It's clearly not a safe place for any country to operate an embassy in. The US embassy there should be closed too.

The US embassy is heavily fortified, as are many US embassies around the world.

The Mexican Embassy was heavily fortified too. The police went over the top of the wall.

In 2019 when the US embassy in Baghdad was attacked and over run, it took hundreds of U.S. Marines 2 days to restore order, and that was with some limited help from Iraqi police and military. US embassies are not that well fortified.

Normally it's the local police who restore order when an embassy is breached. Who is going to help when it's the local police who are doing it?

I thought any property owned by any embassy is part of the territory of that country. Under that pretense, what the Ecuadorian police did was enter Mexican territory without permission.

The most ironic part of all this is the fact that it's ECUADOR, the country that sheltered Julian Assange for years in its embassy in London...

Either they are just too stupid to know they can't do that, or they just don't care. I'm inclined to believe it's both.

The U.S. State Department's statement on the matter is pathetic.

Quote:
The United States condemns any violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and takes very seriously the obligation of host countries under international law to respect the inviolability of diplomatic missions.

Mexico and Ecuador are crucial partners of the United States, and we place a high value on our relations with both countries. We encourage the two countries to resolve their differences in accord with international norms.
Events at the Embassy of Mexico in Ecuador - United States Department of State

Mexico should resolve their differences with Ecuador? They have resolved it, by breaking relations with that criminal government. Which is what the US should be doing.

I get it, the US government doesn't want to see Ecuador turn into another Venezuela. But either you are a free democratic country, or you are not. Appeasing that criminal government is only going to make the matter worse.
