The Dominican government made an official announcement in front of an audience composed of a mix of government personnel, local and foreign investors that Punta BergantÃn will be developed for tourism. Punta BergantÃn is the land comprising between Playa Dorada, on the eastern outskirts of Puerto Plata city, and Montellano (neighboring the airport). Further down is Sosúa and then Cabarete. The land was property of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, which is the owner of Playa Dorada, but sold the land a few months ago to Banreservas Bank.
This is what this project will consist.
- 4,000 new hotel rooms in various new beachfront resorts.
- Residential/commercial mix area.
- A new movies studios (Vin Diesel is behind this one).
- Possibly a new marina.
- An innovation center (whatever that is).
- A new championship golf course (have yet to say who is the designer, though usually they use American, Australian or Spanish designers; we will see).
This will definitely be a further boost to the tourism of Puerto Plata and, most importantly, will create thousands of new jobs for the unemployed and underemployed.
Views of Punta BergantÃn as seen from a commercial airplane landing at the General Gregorio Luperón International Airport near Sosúa.
Thisis closer to the river which appears to be left alone, perhaps convert it into a natural preserve.
This will probably be financed via the various Dominican investment banks recently created in Santo Domingo. Until a few years ago that sector didn't exist at all. In a few years it went from being worth US$0 to under US$3 billion and growing by the end of last year. Already it must be the largest investment banking/stock market industry in the Caribbean and probably beats similar industries in Central America in whichever countries it exist at the moment. All of this created almost exclusively by Dominicans that spent a few years to over a decade in the financial sector of the United States and returned to the DR to create something out of nothing based on their acquired knowledge in US business schools/university and experience in various aspects of the US stock market/financial sector. By the way, many of these Dominicans attended top universities in the USA with fully paid Dominican government scholarships given to the top students in public and private schools in the DR and part of the agreement is that they must return to the DR or they will own their university expenses to the Dominican government and must be repaid. Otherwise it's free for them. These scholarships are not just to several universities in the USA, these scholarships are also granted to study in many of the top schools in Canada, Spain, and Latin America. Otherwise many of these people wouldn't be able to afford studying in places like Harvard, Columbia, Babson College (one of the top school for studying business/entrepreneurship in the USA), Tecnológico de Monterrey, Complutense de Madrid, etc.
The Minister of Tourism signed an agreement at the FITUR 2023 in Madrid, Spain that will make Punta BergantÃn home to the first Planet Hollywood of the DR.
