Quite frequently, someone will start a new thread in this forum asking for opinions on the best parts of town to live. Invariably, someone will provide some variatoin of the standard response, "avoid any part of town ending in 'view" (as well as Muldoon and Spenard). Maybe we need to start adding South Anchorage to that statement. There was yet another shooting in South Anchorage last night. Two young men are dead. My suspicion is that it is gang related activity. By the way I make that statement (about South Anchorage) with tongue in cheek. I happen to think that our crime is still miniscule to many places in the lower 48, but certainly MUCH worse than it was ten years ago.

KTUU was reporting it. It happened near the Fred Meyers on Abbott (in Independence Park).

This?

Two killed, one wounded in South Anchorage shooting - KTUU.com | Alaska's news and information source |

Key words are Independence Park.

IP is a separate microcosm unto itself.

There seems to be a lot of messed up people in Anchorage, so nowhere is really protected, as long as people can drive. Ever since I have moved here there have been bad things happening in South Anchorage.

Seems nice enough to me. But I haven't lived there.

We lived in a nice place on Caroline, other side of Spenard - about 4 blocks away - last year. No problems. My son lives on Taft, same side of Spenard - again, about 4 blocks from there. He has had no problems either. I think as long as you don't walk down Spenard road by yourself in the middle of the night and stay away from drugs or heavy drinking you'll have no worries in Spenard. At least we didn't/don't. I'd live there now except we are in a different middle school now, and we like it.
