I am an Allied Healthcare teacher with almost twelve years of teaching experience. I teach Medical Assistants. I have been applying on and off for jobs from NYC but no luck so far. Any advice and experiences will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Don't come to Alaska before you have a job lined up. The job market is horrible up here right now. Don't come up here without a job.

Don't move anywhere without a job lined out first. Period.

It's a catch 22.

Employers won't even look at your resume if you are out of state and can't be physically present for the interview.

One should not move to another state without a job lined up first.

What to do what not to do?

That's bull**** employers won't do that. If they're like that you don't want to work for them anyway. Plenty of places will hire someone out of state. I've moved to three different states in the last ten years.

Well besides for government, oil, healthcare, teaching, and some other highly skilled jobs, many employers up here are going to be slightly hesitant at best hiring some one who doesn't live here and has never lived here before. It definitely ups your chances of getting employment if you're actually up here. As long as you have sufficient funds to return if it doesn't work out I don't see why it's a problem. Especially for a single person.

If you're flexible in taking whatever job and living accommodations it takes at first until the ideal job and place come into play, it definitely helps.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't recommend an unskilled broke person to come up here with their last $100 to their name, but if you got skills and some backup savings if things don't work out, it's not THAT much different from moving to anywhere else in the country, especially anchorage.

Outside of a few niche occupations, Alaska isn't really the best place if furthering your career and making oodles of money is of uptmost importance to you anyways. Not that it can't be done, but the people who really thrive up here come up more for the lifestyle rather than the money. JMO good luck.

I agree with 6.7. If you have some savings and can move up for a while with enough to head back south if it doesn't pan out, then I'd move up to look for a job. Health care is one of the few sectors in Alaska that is still doing well. Being here will make a difference. I know it does for my company.
