Hi,

I am new here, I am moving to Kodiak in May or June. My Husband is already there. I have to wait until my Son is out of school and the road clears before I drive up there.
There has been alot of great information on here really got some great ideas on driving through Canada. Might also think about taking the ferry from Wa. instead of driving the whole way.

Thanks for the info!

Shy

Welcome! We took the overnight ferry from Homer to Kodiak, it was awesome! We saw many orcas, porpoises, otters, whales, birds, etc.Make sure to book a stateroom if you go this route. Hope you like fishing! We went from stream to stream, catching tons of salmon. It was almost too easy! Kodiak is a beautiful place, but of course a bit isolated. Good thing Anchorage is just a quick flight over.

Thanks for the welcome AKnana, Warpman I am thinking of driving. We have a problem with crossing the boarder, I have joint custody of my Son and haven't been able to find his father in 8 years. So I don't have the proper paper toget him there. We are looking for the cheapest way.

If your a Coastie and this is a transfer aren't they paying for the trip? My daughter and her husband are transfering to Anchorage from Ketchikan and the Coast Guard is paying for the entire move including the ferry trip from Ketchikan to Whittier. If you don't have the signed documentation for your son that could be a problem crossing into Canada. I have seen them give some people are really hard time about that.

When my oldest daughter was 16 we took a road trip to Seattle and when we cleared Customs at Prince Rupert I got the third degree. Had to get my wife to fax over a signed permission slip. I could understand if she was younger but for crying out loud she had her own drivers license.

No, we are not Coasties.. My Husband was a commercial fisherman for 20 yrs. He lived in Kodiak for about 15 of those 20 After he got off the ship he worked as a plumber. He moved back to St. Helens to be near his kids, went to school to get his Journeymans Lic. & then the BIG let down in the economy hit and he couldn't find any work here. He called his old boss in Kodiak & he said move back here I have more work then I can handle... So he is there & I am waiting for the roads to clear and checking out the best options to get there.

If you can't find the ex to sign the papers do you have anything from a court granting you full custody? If your going to drive through Canada that's the one issue you really need to get taken care of first. And even crossing back into the US at the Alaska border could still raise issues without the proper papers.

No when we split up the state of Oregon & Washington tried and have been trying to find him. Anyways my plans are for him to fly and me drive. Someone had mentioned that there was a ferry from Bellingham to Ak. BUT I don't know if it goes all the way to Kodiak or not. If it does then I can have him with me. Just wondering if anyone knows for sure if it goes all the way and how long & how much it cost. I tried to look at the websites but I get confused on where they are going for sure.

The ferries from Bellingham go to Juneau. From there, you can get the ferry to Whiitier or Homer and from those to Kodiak.

For the ferry trip, you have to look at it as 3 separate trips. First, from Bellingham to Juneau, then from Juneau to Whittier and then Whittier to Kodiak. The cost will not be cheap to do this, figure it will be over $2,800 and that's not including a cabin.

Driving directly to Homer is the less expensive option. I would contact Canadian Customs, explain your situation and find out what they would require to cross the border under your circumstances. It may be as simple as getting letters from Washington and Oregon, stating that they have been unable to contact your ex. You won't know until you ask.

Remember, you'll need passports in June to cross the border.
