Yes you can do that, but it requires you to change ferries since the ferry that makes the crossing leaves from Prince Rupert. One problem is that only one or two crossings are made each month and the ferry fills up quickly. Then there is the cost. It's likely cheaper to drive thorough Canada.

Thanks warpt- we're still considering that route as well, though we probably won't decide until the day we leave Wisconsin. I think it's going to depend on how big a difference it's going to be in gas prices between CA & US at the end of July. Probably won't be a huge gap, but even 10¢ adds up over the thousands of km we're going to be driving.
