Are igloos still a good form of shelter or housing? Which states are igloos still being made? Is it Alaska? The Dakotas? I've been curious about igloos if anyone here knows much about them.
Due to the dramatic change in our environment (global warming), igloos are considered temporary shelters today. Besides, just finding enough ice to build one is pretty tough!
Igloos are made from SNOW not ice. Cut blocks of snow, that are shaped to create a circular structure.
The Inuit don't make them any more, they use tents while out hunting on the land. Their homes in their villages are just about like yours, with electric services, oil furnace heating and flat screen TV's. They don't use dogs much any more, they use snow machines. And boats with outboard motors for sealing and fishing .
I am referring to coastal Innu who live in the far northern arctic in Canada.
Snow can be cut and formed into blocks...... Ice cannot. The amount of moisture in snow determines how well it can be formed and curved to create the conical shape of an igloo.
I see that you currently live in Georgia.... have you ever lived in a place where winter temps drop below minus 30 C ? I have.
Ever hear the term "packing snow " as in making a snow ball ? Dry snow won't work for making an igloo. Neither will ice. By the way, the Innu have 25 different words to describe snow conditions.
Practical and personal experience makes a big difference in understanding certain things. This is one of them.
I think what I meant to ask was a dwelling designed after an igloo but not exactly a shelter made of ice or snow. I should have said a dome house that's made to appear like an igloo.
