I have just read the book MARBLE CAMP AND ME by Alma Burroway (a wonderful book, by the way).

The book reminded me of a novel I read some time ago that is set in/around Bowie and touches on the marble quarry. It was probably some sort of historical romance. I cannot for the life of me think what book that was and I would very much like to read it again. Does anyone have any idea what the title might be?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Jann

I remember hunting up Immigrant canyon way years ago and coming across a fellow that had built a veeery slow motorized cart that he used to transport large blocks of marble down the mountain from that quarry...he had a studio at the time in Bowie.

according to Alma Burroway's book they had a tractor of some sort that pulled little flat-bed carts that carried the marble slabs, but I imagine that was way before the time you visited Immigrant canyon.

Thanks for posting.

Incidentally, the Bowie library knew exactly which book I was looking for: CUTTING STONE. (what else????)

Cheers

last time I was up there (several years ago), the (a?) cart was visible in the yard of the ranch (the last ranch) that the road now bypasses....very heavy wide metal wheels and railroad ties for a bed.....was evident that somebody had tried to recently mine the marble again as the wash crossings had been resurrected on the road up to the quarry....very nice hike and what a sight when you get there....
