Has anyone been to Crown King recently? I was told that the road into the place is not paved. Is it suitable for an automobile?

Also, is there a restaurant there?

Thanks for any information and comments about the area.

You need a 4 wheel drive truck to get there

Only if you go up the back way. . The front way through Cleator is well graded. There is a saloon and restaurant up there.

The first time we went to Crown King in the 70s it was in a 62 Ford Falcon. No problems. Never been the back way.

4wd not required from 17. It's a long dirt ride though.

From the I 17. It's a graded dirt road about 27 miles. Don't need a 4x4.
There are a couple of places to eat and a saloon.

The October issue of Arizona Highways magazine has a ghost town feature; the places covered are: Cleator, Congress, Courtland, Dos Cabezas, Fairbank, Gleeson, Harshaw, Humbolt, Pearce, Ruby, Sasco, Stanton, and Swansea. Since they are a travel magazine, they probably have up-to-date travel info on these places. Not to mention good stories and their usual beautiful photography.

I was up there last year and the road though Mayer is paved and maintained dirt/gravel to CK As you can see from the video, there are regular cars at the shop in CK. I'd stop there if you don't have a high clearance vehicle. The road beyond and climbing up to Towers or Wildflower can be dicey. I had to cut fallen branches that intruded into the road. Ask the locals at the store for more info. The back route is unmaintained 4WD and not advised.
