Anyone know if there are local rock hunting groups around that area that I could work with? I want to plan a trip over there this winter, but my husband will be bored spitless while I'm digging. I wondered if there are any groups or people who go regularly that I might go with? Or people who like to help newcomers? Obviously, it would be the first time I've ever done such a thing and being with a group of people who are interested in digging would be great.

I dont live in that area, I guess I'm about 3 hours away?

Any information would be helpful and very much appreciated.

I've been there 3 times. People seem to congregate around the wet sifting pavilions in the field. The last time I was there, I rented a wet sieve and went up to one of the pavilions. Someone from the park staff was there teaching the basics. There was also a long time park visitor who brought his diamond collection to show off. The folks were pretty nice and it was fun to socialize with the other visitors. I've never found anything, but the wet sifting method certainly made it easier to see the finer details. I don't think you'll have any problems finding someone to teach you the basics, just jump in there and have fun. Be sure to dress appropriately. They have water hoses set up if you need to wash off a bit. Lastly, check out youtube. There's a ton of videos about sifting for diamonds at the park. Here's one of them:

THANK YOU!! I never thought to look on youtube for advice!!! I will also email the park for advice, ask if they have any classes on basics and how to dig, etc. A group would really be fun if I could find people to hook up with.

Dress appropriately; means ratty clothes and shoes you're not afraid to get dirty or ruin? I got those, check!

10-4 on the clothes because you are going to get dirty and muddy and the soil is dark gray to black. I once saw a family of tourist who, while passing through the area, decided to stop and dig. The lady came in wearing white blouse, white shorts, and white tennis shoes and socks. She went out dark gray all over .
