It does need jobs for sure. You would think the river traffic would bring in more shipping jobs or trade. Consider it was good part of cotton fields back in the day, so farmers changed to other commodities and ruin any chances of having a cotton mill. Crime is very bad in the area too, so got to counter act that.

When there is little work there usually is a higher crime rate. I have mixed feelings; 1/2 of me feel sorry for the residents that can't find a job and have nothing to do but stand around and think of ways to get into trouble. The other 1/2 says, stay in school, get some kind of training and move to someplace where there are jobs.

The one and only time we drove through the delta I was in a state of shock. I have rarely seen that much poverty. Yes, I mention them standing around: there were groups of mostly young men, drinking out of paper bags, I assume booze, it was mid day and they were just hanging out. Only in parts of NM have I seen anything like this in the USA. I have seen plenty in our world travels, especially in Mexico.

Much of the Delta region is either covered in farm-land, or swampland. The cities in the region rely almost entirely on agriculture, and there just aren't a lot of jobs associated with that anymore now that everything has been mechanized. I could see a few more steel mills, or other industries like pulpwood taking advantage of the natural resources down there.

Perhaps some large-scale organic farming or marijuana farming once the government legalizes it fully.

The climate and landscape lack a lot to be desired. It's hot, humid, filled with mosquitoes, and there are just many other more desirable areas in which to live.

mosquitoes particularly. I remember a trip to Tunica, in fact 2 of them in the summer. Tunic is really that far from Tunica and those buggers were everywhere especially early in the morning.

I would love to own a small, sustainable farm somewhere in the Delta region, but it's not feasible.

One of my first trips to the Ozarks ( about 15 years ago ) I struck up a conversation with a couple from one of the flat land towns. He owned a business and was enjoying a few days vacation in November .


He asked where I was from and I told him and his wife that my wife and I were down to check out retirement re-location.


He stated.........."you picked a good area to check out. I certainly could not recommend our town as I can't think of a single reason why someone from out of state would be attracted to our town "

Well I guess that shows, people in AR are honest; maybe to a fault though.
