Australia geography is located in the Asia Pacific , South of Philippines.

Why is the country not predominately Asian?

Asians are the minority in Australia even though it is in the “Asia-Pacific” region?

How can this be ? It’s considered a majority dominant English speaking country.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

Are you Alleycat from Anthroscape?

I used to be in that site.

Australia is a seperate continent which is mostly desert and the native inhabitants were Australoid Aboriginals. And since its a seperate continent from Asia which was mostly desert it wasnt colonized by Asians but oppurtunistic Brits who explored its far southeast side found a way to exploit its resources and settle it.

Have you not studied any history? Apologies, this question is a way for you to study it!

As stated above, Australia is a separate country to Asia. It was claimed for the UK by Captain James Cook in 1770 on one of his voyages of exploration. In 1788, the first European settlement was established when the First Fleet arrived from the UK. it was in Sydney and other colonies were established after that. It was a convict settlement which the British wanted after the US became independent. THe various colonies federated in 1901, peacefully, to become Australia.

Australia then introduced the White Australia policy with the aim to stop non- European immigration. This was not dismantled until after WW2. These days our immigration policy is non-discriminatory and points based. So many of our population now are Chinese, Indian and other Asian heritage.

I find this history fascinating. It's really interesting that the British went as far East, far South and decided to leave England and settle in Australia and make it their hometown.

As mentioed the UK only really decided to settle Australia, after US independence as they could no longer just dump their petty criminals in the USA like they used to.

After serving time, Australia offerd land, a right to vote and all kinds of oportunities these poor commoners from the UK could really only dream of if they went back home. However is was really gold that bought the first mass migration into Australia.

As with the US and Canadian gold rush, the Australian
Gold Rush also attracted large numbers of chinese immigrants. Also just like the USA and Canada, Australia then implimented a migration policy designed to keep them out.

In 2006 the PM of Canada, Harper, gave a full apology for the head tax that was put on Chinese trying to immigrate to Canada, between 1885 and 1923.

Even after the head tax was removed ,there was still a lot of racist policies that existed, like " no orientals " on property titles, right up to the 1950's !!!

It's a shameful piece of our history.

I have not idea if a formal apology ever came from the Australian government on the WAP. However it was certainly presented as source of national shame to me as a primary school student in the mid 80's. The policy was very strict from 1901 to about 1950, they started slowing letting Asians in after that, before eventually been totally abolished in 1966 (not 1972 as the left would like to claim). However Australia did not really accept mass immigration from Asia, until the Vietnam Refugee crisis in the late 1970's.

In particular this cartoon from 1886, was pointed out as incredibly racist, i am sure most people running through an Australian education system in the last 40 years would have seen it.

Most of those Chinese did not(could not) remain though, so hardly immigrants in the true sense. As you rightly write, further policy was put in place to ensure Chinese/Asian immigration did not feature.

Simply if Asians were not allowed to immigrate they could hardly form a presence. Australia until the sixties and the rise of Japan hardly knew of the existence of Asia. Unless in the negative like war involvement in Korea, Malaysia and later Vietnam.
