Me and my girlfriend are currently in Australia and we are thinking about going to Britain in June. On our way here, we did not rush it and stayed 1 week in Singapore and 1 week in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia, before coming to Australia. On our way back to Europe we are thinking about doing the same thing. However, we are not sure about where to go. Many Australians have recommended Bali or Phuket, but those places do not interest us too much. They seem so exploited and party-oriented. We are looking for some place with a little bit of everything. Some nice nature, culture, history and so forth. Maybe not too expensive, but still safe and friendly. We don’t know much about Asia, so that is why we are turning to you.

We are not interested in Japan, China or India. Too much to do in too little time. Places like Bangkok and Jakarta seems too much alike Kuala Lumpur. We have considered Borneo or Sri Lanka as interesting places. What would you recommend? One or two places. 3-6 days per place.

I was in Sarawak , one of two Malaysian states in Borneo, only last year. Go there, if you like nature, jungle trekking, orang utans, and Kuching the capital is fine as well.

Other countries that are fav's are Laos and Cambodia. Be prepared everywhere has back packers and adventure travellers these days but it won't get any less.

Ayutthaya in Thailand, about 40 miles (64 km) from Bangkok, is very historic. It used to be its own kingdom and contains some incredible temples as well as historical ruins. I'd recommend flying into Bangkok, seeing how you like the city (or not) and then taking the short trip up to Ayutthaya which is remarkably different and impressive in its own right.

Note: The video erroneously states that the distance between Bangkok and Ayutthaya is about twice as long as it actually is, but indeed it's only 40 miles (64 km).

You can still go to Bali but avoid Kuta like the plague, it's like an australian slum. It's a big island so there are other unspoiled places.
I would recommend Thailand and Vietnam, get a travel book and head to the countryside. Avoid the beach resort areas because most of them, even in Cambodia, and Vietnam's getting bad, are again spoiled by the young backpacker crowd looking for cheap weed and cheap booze.

actually only 2 of the best places in Southeast Asia are Bali and Phuket

Bali should be the most suitable place according to your caption because there are many places that offer beautiful nature, culture, food, beaches and in bali you can avoid a place like "Legian Kuta " because it is too full of bogans Aussie and you might get into trouble with them especially knowing if you are not Aussie

I recommend Toba Lake (North Sumatra), Mount Bromo (East Java), Borobudur and Prambanan Temple (Central Java), Komodo (NTT)

BTW Borneo / Kalimantan Indonesia maybe you can enjoy Dayak ethnic culture

Northern Thailand. Or, Ayutthaya, though I'm not sure you'd want to spend a whole week there (but if you want to do more history, there's Sukhothai, though you'll have to travel). The train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya only costs 20 baht (less than US$1). Laos is nice. Cambodia is cheap and has Angkor Wat/Siem Reap.

Explore culture and modernity within Metro Cebu with nearby resorts around Mactan Island. Sinulog unfortunately will be missed as it is done January. Go canyoneering in Badian and see the Gatorade factory of Kawasan Falls. Include swimming with whale sharks in Oslob if that is your thing.

With Bohol added, you can see the Chocolate Hills, chill around Alona Beach and the many resort option from budget to high-end there, drive around man-made forest in motorbike passing by neat towns with interesting cathedrals and churches, do a culture and ecotour immersion with Loboc River Cruise and see the worlds smallest primate, the tarsier.

You can skip one or two or add them all to your itinerary.
