In a debate with a Catholic friend this week I was hit with statistics on condom safety. She listed a safety effectiveness of 15 to 20%, and insisted it was documented numbers. I suspect this is the data the church is publishing to excuse the ban on condom use in the 3rd world.
I did the research to check those numbers and found the effectiveness is over 98% when used as instructed. It is still not as good I would like to see, but much better than the statistics when condoms are used only during the fertile periods of a woman’s cycle (15% to 20%), which appears to be what was being quoted to her and stated as effectiveness. I wonder how many other statistic the church is misquoting in order to justify their poor doctrine?

What I find laughable are the raging anti-choice people who say "life begins at conception" but then say it's okay to use birth control pills. They obviously don't understand that you can still easily have conception while using the pill correctly. Granted, the pill should keep a fertilized egg from being implanted, but it doesn't always prevent ovulation OR fertilization.

For condoms to be only 15-20% effective, it seems like a person would either have to be tearing them all the time, or simply have no idea how to use one, which should (I would think) be pretty self-explanatory. That being said, one of my coworkers worked at Walmart as a teenager, and he said one of his coworkers would unpack the condoms for display, and sometimes poke tiny holes through the individual packages and condoms with a needle. What a great guy.

I just wrote a huge rant about this after a religious group on campus forced the school to stop offering coupons to the nearby condom shop. All these people are doing is driving the birth and std rates up but they simply will not see that. These people are so stuck to their guns they'll never see anything but what fits their convenient keyhole view of things.

I have read if condoms are used only during the fertile period of a female’s cycle they have a greater chance of becoming pregnant or contracting an STD.
I have to think even a rock would recognize the exposure without a condom for most of the month would make the chance of getting an STD much higher than if you used a condom all the time. The cycle method for preventing pregnancy also looks more like Russian roulette than birth control, and did have a pregnancy rate of close to 20% as opposed to less then 2%.

Condoms are often ineffective because no one likes to use them.

Otherwise, the physics of it all seems pretty obvious.

I understand where you are coming from and I personally like the idea of Physics and sex. It sounds like a wonderful combination. Ms. CNC on the other hand puts up with a lot from me, and I don’t think she would fall for a good discussion on astrophysics as an acceptable form of foreplay.
