I feel like I'm replying to a troll, but whatever....

First thing, the city of Atlanta's black population is dropping while the white population is growing.

2nd thing, because of how large the metropolitan area of Atlanta is, the suburbs are generally more diverse then the city of Atlanta itself. Most people when they refer to Atlanta, they mean more the just the city proper.

3rd thing, it's hard for me to believe that I'm 'defending' Atlanta so to save myself, I'll say, that Atlanta is still not at a world-class city yet, but just because it isn't super diverse like NYC doesn't mean that it can't become world-class.

actually, Atlanta is diverse. The city population is mostly black and white but the surrounding area is very diverse. You also have to keep in mind that only 10% of the actual Atlanta population lives within city limits, the remaining live all around it. You are talking about inner city populations but there are lots of other people in the metro area.

Want to hear something funny? I was in the "Walking Dead" thread (under entertainment / TV ) and people were actually criticizing the show for having white people because "everybody knows Atlanta is all black." There's a ton of ignorance about this city still ....

The city of Atlanta proper is not all that diverse and probably won't be for the foreseeable future.

However, Gwinnett County is an amazing example of urban diversity. Cobb seems to be moving in the same direction. I'd say these big counties likely represent the future demographics of the metro area.

Will the Mexican gangs in LA stop killing blacks in the future?

It depends on how you define diversity. Will Atlanta have greater numbers and more equal ratios of all races? Sure. But will they all be living in harmony? Not unless there's a major social change coming down the pike. There's too much of a racial divide for this area to be considered truly diverse.

On my way to the grocery store the other day in Midtown, I heard three distict languages spoken other than english within a four block walk. I think the city has more diversity than it's given credit for. Sure, the southside is almost exclusively black, but how is that any different than Chicago?

The city also has a lot of "diversity" within the US, as in you can meet people in Atlanta that come from all over this country, for what it's worth.
