What is this madness I'm reading all over the blogs pertaining to GA's new law as to car registration taxes, add valorem taxes, out of state registration taxes and or percentages on the value of the car. It's all a little confusing. Can someone please try to put it in laymans terms? We all pay taxes at the time of purchase, interest on the loans, some states have emissions, other than that, what is going on Georgia?

We used to pay a small yearly "birthday tax" but now we just pay a larger chunk up front on all cars. You have to pay whether you buy here or bring a car here.

Is this larger chunk a one time fee or yearly? Is there a percentage as to the value and age of the car?

One time and I believe it's seven percent of the value.

Thanks for your help. It's one of those things we all have no matter where we live.
