Me and my family will be moving to the area. Children are ages 5-12. Looking to hopefully live off lake lanier. Work is in norcross, but we don't mind driving 30-40 minutes if necessary. Looking to spend in the 500-600k range. Older children are active in travel soccer so having a soccer league close by would be a plus. Looking for a good Christian school as well. We would like to have some property with some land if possible (don't want just 0.5 acre like we have now). We need to know where is the best place to start looking for homes. What side of lake is best? Which city? Prefere to not have neighbors too close by. Prefere not to live in a subdivision as we would like to be able to do what we want on our property (ie. no restrictive covenants). Would also be nice to only have a short drive to shopping/dining/entertainment. I would also appreciate input on nice areas that are not on the lake incase that route doesn't work out for us. Thanks in advance for your help!!

The homes right on the water are nice. From my experience the towns around the lake have a very high population of hispanics and I personally wouldn't be comfortable with it. I've been told there is a huge poultry processing plant nearby (Flowery Branch I believe) that attracts a lot of migrant works to the area.

Last time I visited Lake Lanier I had to fight for a spot to fish among large groups of hispanics and their families. I have seen it all...littering, bathing (seriously) in the lake, using public fishing areas as a toilet (and I'm not talking about taking a leak behind a tree). I will never go back until something is done about it. Such a shame.

...Take your pick of where to look.

You can look around in Forsyth or Dawson counties (on the westside of Lake Lanier), or in Hall and Gwinnett counties (on the north and eastsides of Lake Lanier).

With historic downtown Gainesville, historic downtown Buford (home to a burgeoning artists' colony) and the Mall of Georgia area being on the eastside of the lake, your shopping/dining/entertainment options may be slightly more in abundance on the eastside (generally the I-985 side) of Lake Lanier than on the westside (generally the GA 400 side) of Lake Lanier.

Though there are some notable shopping/dining/entertainment options on the westside (the GA 400 side) of Lake Lanier with a very-large shopping area at the junction of GA 400 & GA 20, another shopping area near the North Georgia Premium Outlets Mall near the junction of GA 400 and GA 53 in Dawsonville, and a collection of small, adorable shops in walkable historic downtown Dahlonega which is located northwest of Lake Lanier up GA 60/US 19 in the North Georgia Mountains.
