I am thinking about moving to Decatur Georgia. I'm 27 years old white and married. I currently live in Portland, Or and have received an offer to teach at one of the local schools in Decatur. I was wondering if people would give me some info about Decatur. How much is a typical power, gas, water, etc bill? How much are taxes on houses? Is it a good place to start a family etc. Thanks for all the help.

I'm an black female and I visited Decatur, Lithonia and Stone Mountain all located in Dekalb co. and I wouldn't live in any of those areas. Not to say they are bad because my mom's friend is buying a $600K house in Lithonia, but I like diversity. Have you ever considered working for Henry county? One of my co-workers here in Miami has a cousin and friend that both moved to Hampton and Stockbridge this year and they're both teachers and love the area.

Decatur is pretty nice. It is known as the "Berkley of the South" in some circles as it is a somewhat progressive/liberal enclave.

It offers a pretty high quality of life with fairly low crime yet somewhat close to Downtown ATL and on the Marta line for public transit.

I would say if you can take the humidity increase from Portland you will like Decatur.

If you decide to move to Decatur, make sure it's North Decatur around the Briarcliff/Emory University area. That's the best part of Decatur. Very educated people, very diverse, lots of transplants and students. Be prepared, though, it'll cost you. The area has good schools and it's near a prestigous university and it's convienent to the city. Just a heads up. Don't know exact utility cost.
