Bright lights, big questions | Atlanta News & Opinion Blog | Fresh Loaf | Creative Loafing Atlanta

Some Atlanta streets will be brighter thanks to a funding award from the state. CL reader Daniel Bryant writes in a guest op-ed that he has concerns about brightness and accountability. He also wonders why Atlanta is opting for one technology over another.

Atlanta's new lights may be bright, but the decisions are being made in the dark. Article by me.-10487738_10103381207220470_415645775_n.jpg

Congrats on being published!

You know what I don't like? Inconsistent lighting. Whatever the type, I like the same types of lights on both sides of the street. It may seem like a small thing or petty, but when I'm unfamiliar with an area, it bothers me.

that is a huge issue. if you look at Atlanta's street lighting, you've got super bright lights on one street, then no lights at all on another— regardless of the size of the street.

what i would like to see is *reasonably* bright lighting on nearly every street. residential streets need less brightness than arterial streets, and arterial streets need less than freeways. this is why there needs to be a serious effort with this conversion— not just buying one fixture for the whole city and swapping out the existing fixtures.

if atlanta goes ahead with the types of lights it has installed on beckwith street, especially in residential areas, i can guarantee that you will see a lot of complaints. for those of you who haven't driven down that street at night, you need to check it out, because that's what'll be coming your way in the next year.
