Smyrna was on the short list of cities picked for Google Fiber. Are you looking forward to switching from Charter to Google Fiber when Google is finished?

In other markets, Google Fiber offers 1Gbps internet (each way) and television service.

The city is working closely with Google to make Google Fiber a reality and has been working hard even before the February announcement to be on the forefront when it comes to getting more fiber throughout the city.

Would sign up for it tomorrow if it came. Hope Max and his team are working to make this happen for Smyrna.

I would drop Charter today if Google Fiber was available in my area (Gwinnett).

Will Google Fiber come to Midtown?

Edit: I just checked and it's not coming to Midtown, or anywhere actually within the Atlanta city limits. How the hell does EAST POINT AND COLLEGE PARK get Fiber and the nicest, richest areas of the city don't? That's ridiculous that Midtown and Buckhead aren't on the list yet places like Hapeville and East Point are.

Whoa, calm down, soldier. You're reading the list of additional cities without noticing the one in big print above it is "Atlanta." Try this: go to the Google Fiber lookup tool and try a city of Atlanta address, then a Smyrna address, then a Marietta address. "Atlanta could get Google Fiber" and "Smyrna could get Google Fiber" but with a Marietta address it's "Google Fiber isn't available for this area." (hah!) https://fiber.google.com/other/

“Communities with abundant high-speed Internet grow stronger because there’s greater potential to create jobs, drive economic growth, and help students and families get access to essential resources” said Kevin Lo, General Manager for Google Fiber. “City leaders like Mayor Kasim Reed are stepping up to see what they can do to make their cities ready for the fiber-optic networks that are the future. We look forward to working with Atlanta in the coming months to see if we can build the next chapter of the Internet together, on gigabit speeds.”

Atlanta is also hiring a City Manager who's sole purpose is working with Google Fiber. https://www.google.com/about/careers...&jid=42685001&

Btw, on May 5, I got this email from Google Fiber. Yay!

Good news!

The City of Smyrna has submitted its fiber-ready checklist, bringing you and your neighbors one step closer to a new, high-speed network and all that comes with faster Internet. This was the first step in seeing if your city is a good fit for Google Fiber.

We’ve been impressed by how enthusiastic the City of Smyrna has been as we’ve worked with them over the past few months — so let’s take a moment to thank them for everything they’ve done so far.

Check out this graphic and show support for your city’s hard work.

Next, our team will continue to work with your city, and use information from the checklist to start planning out what a local fiber network could look like. There are still many details to figure out before we can make a final decision about bringing Google Fiber to Smyrna.

We’ll keep you updated on what’s next, but for now, we wanted to share the good news that your city is one step closer to getting Fiber.

Thanks,

The Google Fiber Team

Bet you won't go down to College Park and say that.

That is an ad to work for the Google Fiber Team... not the city.

Essentially Google is looking for a local liaison to do whatever is needed to work with various cities, figure things out, solve problems, etc...

Hmm, you're right. Interesting... I wonder if this is one manager for the entire region. I don't see a position listed for any other of the metro cities on the list.

We're already looking out for her/him. Hater

I only like Gfiber for the competition/options. I'd love to get rid of comcast, but I rarely need anything over 50mbps. I'm also not roaring to give every single bit of my personal data over to the great but dangerously knowledgeable G.
