Freaknik: The rise and fall of Atlanta

A very interesting read from many different perspectives.

I remember that it was a mess. Weddings that had been planned months in advance were ruined because participants could not get to venues, emergency vehicles had problems getting through the traffic , people who lived on Peachtree could not get out and about to conduct their normal lives.
Peachtree is not set up for cruising like tourist beaches are, with all the tourists beachfront and the locals further inland.

Shoot I remember 75 and 285 were huge parking lots too, with girls in G-strings twerking in truck beds parked up along the sides of the roads. It was kinda gross, seeing all that flesh on view. Especially in the car with my friend's mother. She had come down to visit, and she was shocked and a bit heartsick I think. She had been in various Civil Rights marches up north and I remember her saying "This is what I marched and got the hose for?"

One of our kids got married that weekend and several Freaknik attendees decided they would line up on the sidewalk, whip out their weenies and pee as the wedding party exited the church.

Very classy.

Funny in hindsight, mortifying at the time.

Thank god that event is long dead & in the past.
I recall that, in addition to the type of vulgar public display that Arjay related, there was an unfortunate amount of racist remarks & homophobia directed at intown residents & people who worked in the affected areas.
To top it off, the trash left in public areas was disgusting & the COA had to pick up the tab for the cleanup as well as the bill for the extra APD hours worked.
