I will keep this short, but it's been a long time that I've brought this up: To compete with some other large metro areas like L.A., we need to have faster access to beaches and the mountains and other recreation. We need a high-speed connection to Savannah/Hilton Head and/or the Gulf Coast. Another to Cherokee, NC , Asheville and Gatlinburg Tennessee would be nice.

It's not the vacation market that drives transportation, it's economic movement. A connection to Savannah will carry tourists sure, and plenty of them, but the real benefit is the movement of employees, not as commuters necessarily, but as people that need to be on-site at various times for various reasons. The primary targets for HSR out of Atlanta should be Charlotte (gateway to the Northeast) and Jacksonville (gateway to Florida via All Aboard Florida). Conventional-speed regional rail work work well out to Chattanooga, Augusta, LaGrange and maybe Birmingham (more challenging due to terrain).

Yeup, HSR would work as an extension from D.C. and the Northeast Corridor, as well as an extension of whatever Florida puts together.

The problem is Jacksonville will not see any All Aboard Florida trains for probably a decade if ever. Obama handed Florida $2 billion to build HSR and Governor Skeletor turned it down and Georgia is more conservative than Florida so what makes you think Georgia could build HSR?

Jacksonville is on AAF's radar, they want to have full-length service. But all I was talking about was how effective it would be.

definitely agree. the megalopolis (from washington to boston) is going to eventually extend all the way down to atlanta; if you're watching growth patterns it's incredibly clear. the economic impact of a high speed connection to charlotte and eventually raleigh will be huge.

Florida is just as conservative as Georgia, or you wouldn't have elected Skeletor twice.

And All Aboard Florida is a totally private venture, there was no public vote for this project.
