Hi Everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm considering moving to Marietta and I'm attracted to living where my kids would attend Sprayberry High. However, from what I can tell this will put me sort of in the middle of Marietta. I work as a software applications developer and I believe there is great possibility that I would probably find my first job in the area downtown. If you have any experience commuting to downtown from this area (30066), I really would like to know how long it takes and also how long it might take you to get to I-75 (if you use it to get downtown). If you have a better route, I'd like to know it as well. Seems as though it would take at least 15 minutes just to get to the interstate which is something I'm not used to because I've always lived within about 2 miles of an interstate. So, I really would have to get used to this.

Secondly, if your child attends or attended Sprayberry High, I would like to hear about the experience. From what I can tell, it really seems like a good school that offers quite a bit of diversity in its student body. If I'm correct about this, this seems like the type of school I really want to send my daughters to in the future. I'm willing to sacrifice my commute if the school is right for the kids.

Thanks in advance to those with helpful responses.

I'm kind of interested in this thread. Looking in East Cobb but don't want to fork over $500K. Trying to stay between $200-$400. I'm surprised that there haven't been any responses yet. Sprayberry seems like a doable area and very diverse. School ratings are good but I know it's not as good as Pope/Walton. I'm also curious as to which Elementary schools are better in that district since I have a very young child(Kincaid/Addison/Murdock/Mountain View). Any advise would be helpful.

We lived in the Sprayberry district off of Bells Ferry Road. Nice older middle class neighborhood. Did not take but 5 mins to get on to 75 at the Canton connector. You need to go to the district's web site and look at the attendance zone, there are neighborhoods that are Sprayberry zoned very close to 75.

And technically, you are NOT in the center of Marietta. All of Sprayberry is in unincorporated Cobb, albeit the vast majority does have a Marietta zip code. There might be a small section of Sprayberry with a Kennesaw zip, in the vicinity of Hawkins Store and Canton Roads, but this is the area where Kell/Sprayberry/North Cobb all gerrymander.

I sold a home to a client last month who purchased in this general area. He works at Grady and said it takes about 30-45 minutes to get to/from work.

It sounds like you don't have a job in the area yet, is that true? Along with downtown or Buckhead, there are a lot of software development jobs in the Perimeter Center area and Alpharetta. You may want to consider locating in an area which would allow a reasonable commute (if there's such a thing in Atlanta!) to those areas as well.

There are homes in east Cobb for less than $500K. There are currently 160 homes for sale in Walton, Pope, Lassiter, and Wheeler high school districts.

Um, the Sprayberry district is East Cobb as well.

The Sprayberry Cluster is one of the best kept secrets in the Metro Atlanta Area--especially considering it is in the Northern Arc:

1. Good Schools/Great Academics
2. Beautiful Homes and Neighborhoods--lots of choices and variety.
3. Excellent Interstate Access--and access to major job centers
4. East Cobb Amenities and Convenience

And--school "ratings" do not tell the whole story. Sprayberry suffers because of the hyper over-interest in Pope/Walton/Lassiter. If Sprayberry was located among the schools of West Cobb, for example, it would be seen more favorably.

Three middle schools feed into Sprayberry High: Daniell (100%), Simpson (45%), and McCleskey (~15%). All three middle schools are good, with Simpson seen as particularly well-regarded (Simpson is included when people talk about the "golden" middle schools of East Cobb: Dickerson, Dodgen, Hightower Trail, Mabry, Simpson). And McCleskey and Daniell are strong as well.

The elementary schools that feed all, mainly, or partly into Sprayberry are: Addison, Bells Ferry, Kincaid, Mountain View, Blackwell, Nicholson, Chalker, and Sedalia Park.

Most neighborhoods in most parts of the cluster would be good.

However, if I had to recommend a Sprayberry feeder line, my list would look like this:

1. Mountain View/Simpson
2. Kincaid/Simpson
3. Addison/Simpson

Then...
4. Nicholson/McCleskey (great neighborhoods/schools here {ie., Heritage Farms Subdivision}, however, the feeder pattern is small from this line--which could be difficult for some kids going from 8th to 9th grade).
5. Blackwell/Daniell
6. Chalker/Daniell

I hope this helps. I would definitely raise a family in the Sprayberry Area. Let me know if you have more questions. Good Luck!

{As I mentioned, the area is a wonderful secret. Hence, the lack of responses to this thread.}

Where is Bells Ferry on your list? The thing that has changed since my kids were there over a decade ago: it is the school that is taking in most of the apartments that have since mushroomed in the Town Center area.... at least those closer to Barrett Parkway. Ones closer to Chastain are Chalker I do believe. Schools that draw from heavy apartment areas do suffer from the sometimes transient nature of apartment dwellers. But we loved Bells Ferry when our kids were there.

Default Mountain View ES

Mountain View Elementary is getting a brand new school building that will start construction on Sandy Plains Road very soon. It is scheduled to open in Fall 2017.
