I currently live in Indianapolis and my children attend a wonderful public reggio emilio inspired elementary school. We plan to move to Atlanta next summer and I am starting to look for elementary schools for them. I am open to the area of the city, but my partner will be working in Decatur, so we are going to stay on the east side, preferably out of the loop. We are not buying a house until I find the school I want the kids to go to, so we are open at this point. I am looking for a reggio emilio school or a school that is focused on the child's whole growth, not just academics. Other styles of education that are similar would be Waldorf or simply natural learning. Montessori isn't quite the same and since my children have not attended montessori, most likely would not be able to attend a montessori elementary school. I would prefer a public school, but am open to private too. Even a standard public school that is more alternative- ie: not forcing kids into desks reading text books.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to look or find these schools? Anyone have any great elementary school suggestions on the east side of Atlanta?

Thanks for your help!
Amy

City of Decatur schools might be granola enough for you, though. Check it out. Sudbury school (which is like the unschooling school) is in Avondale Estates.

Thanks- I should have included that I have already found the Waldorf School of Atlanta, The Museum School and a small private Reggio Inspired school in Roswell. The Museum School looks fabulous, but the odds of getting in appear to be pretty low. Hoping to find some other schools like those.

Excellent. Roswell would be difficult to do with traffic.

Thanks PTC Dad- do you know if any of those are non-traditional schools? I really want a school that doesn't require students to sit at a desk and do workbooks/tests a lot of the time. Thanks!

Fernbank is an IB school. I believe the others in Fulton and DeKalb county are also forms of traditional schools. I'm not as familiar with the Gwinnett County schools.

Paideia is a non-traditional private school. Their students describe it as a school "founded by a couple of hippies."

I think these are all traditional schools except for Fernbank, but I'm not sure about the City of Atlanta schools on the list (Lin, Springdale, Mary Lin). Also, the City of Decatur schools may offer some non-traditional programs.

Cliff Valley School, Arbor Montessori, Intown Community School (if you are Christian), and the Friends School are small, private schools that would appeal to you and are on the east side of town.
