Atlanta is not as far behind as you think

The City of Atlanta applied for the Safer Roads Challenge - a worldwide innovation initiative - and the North Avenue project was the only North American site chosen. DiMassimo says officials with huge tech firms like IBM chose a place in China, one in Spain … and this one in Midtown.

The biggest concerns, DiMassimo says, with autonomous vehicle technology are the speed of implementation - can infrastructure and technology keep up - and the susceptibility for the cars or infrastructure to hacking. Grants and interest from USDOT and the Safer Roads Challenge help strengthen Atlanta for self-driving vehicles.

Let's get these sonofaguns on the road ASAP. Likewise with small self-driving buses that can provide last mile connectivity and more frequency.

I can imagine a developer buying a dedicated small bus AV to move people to a nearby transit station on demand.

That would be an excellent application, brown_dog! Get whole fleets of them for high-density employment nodes like Midtown, Buckhead, downtown, Cumberland and Perimeter.

Oh man, I love this news! This is the perfect corridor. It could lead to some interesting testing as it will have to interact with the streetcar as well.

I drive this corridor nearly every day, these improvements sound awesome just for regular cars. Can't wait for this. Finally, something I directly benefit on!

Nice little gem:

DOT officials say that the reversible lanes and managed lanes they are building around town are being made with autonomous vehicles in mind.
This is really good to hear and the only silver lining to these stupid toll lanes.

An issue being, the private owner then decides who can ride on the shuttle. Like PCM free shuttle to North Ave, it is only available to residents and employees of PCM, not visitors. I had the same issue in Perimeter Center with the Perimeter Center Shuttle that served many of the office parks. Tried to board it to ride to Dunwoody ; I was asked for an employee badge and then told to get off.

That is ridiculous! Unless overcrowding or bad behaviour is an issue why would anybody care who gets on their bus?

Ass, grass, or gas; nobody rides for free.
