The Georgia Public Policy Foundation has made a pitch to leave rail behind and embrace driverless cars. I'll just leave a link to the article. As always, keep it civil!

Everything we are seeing so far with Uber shows that self-driving-taxis will be complimentary to transit and increase ridership of both.

I am fine continuing to pursue options like this. But we should not pretend that it is going to replace all transportation methods. In fact, even what they are proposing is really just blurring the line between transit and cars.

GPPF is a right-wing outfit, so not a surprising slant against the socialist evils of mass transit, where the CEO's would have to share rides in trains with all the filthy poors that work for them.

However I'm all for trying anything involving autonomous vehicles, 4-person cars as opposed to 1-person, and Plane Train like people mover systems and smaller scale or even personal scale transit. I'm all for any of the above, and/or trains.

Go ride in Google's self-driving cars in California or a Tesla on Autopilot down I-285 and try to say that with a straight face.

Technology to account for all of the variables that can arise while driving is still well into the future.

I don't see the manufacturers getting a liability break and I don't see them stopping hackers from causing problems.

They are already doing a better job than people do accounting for all the varables: Tesla Model S autopilot prevents man colliding with truck in Ohio

And remember, this technology is driving around on Atlanta streets right now.
